04 Mar Microsoft Website Tracks IE6 Countdown
For web developers Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 (IE6) has been nothing short of a nightmare. The browser seems to have its own set of rules when it comes to rendering proper validated HTML pages and any coder will tell you this.
Now, Microsft seems bent on putting that IE6 to rest. The company has gone so far as to dedicated a website tracking the browser’s end: http://ie6countdown.com/.
“This website is dedicated to watching Internet Explorer 6 usage drop to less than 1% worldwide, so more websites can choose to drop support for Internet Explorer 6, saving hours of work for web developers,” Microsoft writes on the site.
From their official twitter account, Microsoft even tweeted: “It’s not often that we encourage you to stop using one of our products, but for #IE6, we’ll make an exception: http://bit.ly/g0wt4m”
And for most of us the end can’t come soon enough. However, it’s still amazing to think that 12% of the Web is still using IE6, down from 19% at this time last year.
