18 Nov Is the Meta Keywords Tag Important?
Since I just posted on the meta description tag, it’s only fair to give the meta keywords tag equal space.
Common format: <meta name=”keywords” content=”<keyword1>,<keyword2>,…<keywordXX>” />;
In general, I never meta tag I didn’t like until this one, get it? Okay, bad joke.
Point is, this tag is pretty much on the outs in the search engine community. Few search engines even acknowledge or index it anymore and even fewer, if any, base rankings upon its values – some word argue Yahoo still may have an interest, but there’s little evidence to support such a claim.
So if you want to use it that’s fine and if you don’t that’s okay, too.
I like to use it almost for the sake of good practice and nostalgia of how it was in the late 90s when this tag held some meaning. And when I do use it I put about 7-10 keywords (each keyword separated by a comma) in the tag remembering to get overly spammy and keyword-crazy.
The keywords should be those main KWs found within the content of you page. So if your webpage or site was about the stock market your meta tag might look like:
<meta name=”keywords” content=”stock market, dow jones, nasdaq, economy, charts, quotes, ticker” />
But again, its value in today’s SEO world is next to nil, so don’t spend too much time on it!
